George Gallop info

Major Events > Embassy/Bristol Grand Prix > The George Gallop Archive

George Gallop is a Bristol photographer who covered many types of photographic assignments during his long career. George is now retired - but most of his photographic  life was spent operating from his studio in the Hotwells Road, where he was based for almost 25 years. He now enjoys a more serene life in his countryside bungalow, close to the big city.

He is a great believer in posterity and he's just spent almost four years, with the help of a Friend and computer whizz, David Cousins, collating his negatives and prints; 10,000 of which have been scanned, categorised and put in appropriate folders for  easy identification. These together with roughly 76,000 negatives are deposited with the Bristol Record Office. He still holds the copyright but his work is permanently on loan. More of George's photographs can be found online at HYPERLINK "http://www.bristol-city.gov.uk/archives" \t "display"

George grew up in the Knowle area of Bristol and first started to learn his trade from the city's top photographer, Jim Facey - who was a World Press Award winning  press photographer. Before striking out on his own, Jim had been Picture Editor for the Bristol Evening Post, a newspaper that George did freelance work for over a period of fourteen years.

Each year one of the assignments covered by George was the powerboat racing in Bristol Docks. He took many superb pictures of the powerboat racing and he has kindly allowed them to be included on the website.
